Two people close to Mozambican opposition figure Venancio Mondlane, including his lawyer, were shot dead at close range on the night of Friday October 18 to Saturday October 19 in Maputo.
The killings come at a particularly opportune time, as the country is just emerging from important elections.
“The two men were killed in their car, which was stuck in the center of Maputo,” according to witnesses
“They were seated at the front of the vehicle when two assailants opened fire, around twenty bullets were fired,” the witnesses added.
Lawyer Elvino Dias was killed as he was preparing to lodge a complaint to denounce fraud in the recent elections, and on his Facebook page he recently expressed concern about a plan to assassinate him.
