Home Affairs Minister Kithure Kindiki was appointed Kenya’s new vice-president by Head of State William Ruto on Friday, following a vote in the Senate, according to reports.
“This morning, I received a message from His Excellency, the President, regarding the appointment of Professor Kithure Kindiki […] to fill the vacant post of Vice-President of the Republic of Kenya, following the removal of the previous holder of the post,” National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula announced to MPs.
Rigathi Gachagua had been removed from the vice-presidency on Thursday in an unprecedented procedure, the culmination of several months of conflict between President William Ruto and his number two, reportes stated.
The Senate found Rigathi Gachagua guilty of five of the eleven charges contained in the impeachment motion, pointing out that all the upper house had to do was find him guilty on one count for him to be removed from office.
Rigathi Gachagua, 59, whose charges include corruption and abuse of power, becomes the first vice-president to be removed from office under such a procedure, provided for in the 2010 Constitution.
