10 dead in mine collapse in Zambia

Ten miners died and five others survived despite their injuries after the mine where they were extracting gold collapsed in the Mumbwa district, around 150 kilometers west of Lusaka, the capital of Zambia.

“An unspecified number of people had gone to carry out mining activities in the mine and in the course of their activities, the earth collapsed on top of them,” Charity Chanda, police commissioner for Central Province, said.

“Rescue efforts have found six injured miners, while the deaths of nine others have been confirmed at the scene. Unfortunately, one of the six injured miners succumbed to his injuries at Nangoma Mission Hospital,” Chanda added.

Efforts to rescue the remaining miners trapped under the debris were still underway, and that the injured miners were receiving treatment at the nearby Nangoma Mission Hospital.

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema warned against unsafe mining practices, urging citizens interested in the sector to ensure they obtain licenses to conduct mining activities in a safe and legal environment.
