A town in Massachusetts, USA, has imposed the closing of its public parks from dusk to morning due to the spread of a mosquito carrying the Eastern equine encephalitis virus, a potentially fatal disease.
To slow the spread of the virus, the town of Plymouth has decided to close “all its parks and fields from dusk until early morning” starting “Friday, August 23”.
The sports activities planned in these places are therefore temporarily suspended.
The town of Oxford has banned all outdoor activities after 6 p.m. In both cases, the aim is to limit outings to times when mosquitoes are most active.
Eastern equine encephalitis virus, also known as triple E, is a rare but potentially fatal disease. Symptoms range from headaches to fever, vomiting and seizures. According to health authorities, about 30% of those infected die, while many others suffer neurological aftereffects.
