Six children have died and 19 others were seriously injured in an accident that occurred this Wednesday, July 31, in South Africa between a freight train and a school bus, the government said.
A previous report stated that five children were killed and 20 injured. The accident occurred in the afternoon in the village of Mafube, near the city of Middelburg, some 180 kilometers northeast of Johannesburg, according to the local press.
“The six students succumbed to their injuries at the nearest hospital” where they had been transported, the provincial Department of Transport said in a statement.
The school bus, carrying 30 children, crossed a railway line as the train approached.
“Young and innocent lives cannot be lost through carelessness,” it said, asserting that “people must be held accountable for their negligence.”
The transport ministry, citing police, said the bus driver fled after the accident. The train driver and crew were not injured.
