At least 30 dead and 35 missing after torrential rains

Torrential rains hit China on Monday, July 29, leaving at least 30 dead and 35 missing in a village in the center of the country, state television CCTV reported on Thursday, August 1.

The town of Zixing, located some 1,500 km southwest of Beijing, had experienced record rainfall at the beginning of the week with 645 millimeters of rain recorded locally in 24 hours, the official Xinhua news agency reported at the time.

A village attached to the city of Zixing had been temporarily cut off from the world, without access to communications or the road network.

“The authorities had urgently dispatched more than 5,000 rescuers and more than 11,000 residents had been evacuated,” according to Xinhua. The latest report, dated Tuesday, reported four dead and three missing.
