July 26 is now an official “holiday” in Niger, coup leaders said

The day of July 26 is now an official “holiday” in Niger to commemorate every year the arrival of the military to power through a coup d’état on this date in 2023, the Nigerien government announced on Monday.

“Brigadier General Abdourahamane Tiani, head of the military regime, signed today an order at the end of which the anniversary of July 26 is established as a legal holiday”, indicated the government in a press release broadcast on the radio public.

It does not specify whether this day will be a public holiday.

Festivities are planned from July 26 to August 3, the date marking the 64th anniversary of the independence of Niger, a former French colony.
