Passenger train derails, killing at least two people and injuring 35 others

A train derailed and several of its cars overturned this Thursday, July 18 in the state of Uttar Pradesh, in northern India, killing at least two people and injuring 35, the railway company Indian Railways said.

“Two people died,” said Pankaj Kumar Singh, spokesman for Indian Railways, the state-owned company that operates the Indian rail network.

Uttar Pradesh state rescue chief Neveen Kumar said 35 other people were injured, three of them seriously. He added that rescue operations had been completed and no one was trapped inside the train.

“District administration officials have been tasked with carrying out relief and rescue operations,” wrote Yogi Adityanath, chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, lamenting an “extremely sad” accident.
