At least 26 people were killed and 14 injured this Tuesday, July 16 when the bus transporting them fell 200 meters into a ravine in southern Peru, according to a new toll from the authorities revised upwards.
The bus was providing a connection between Lima and the Andean region of Ayacucho when, for an as yet undetermined reason, it fell into the void.
“A final report shows 26 people dead and 14 injured,” said Colonel Jhonny Valderrama, head of the highways division. He had previously reported 21 dead and 20 injured.
“The area is difficult to access for emergency services,” he stressed, indicating that an “investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident.”
Many accidents
Another bus accident on the same road which connects the Pacific coast to the Andean south of Peru left 17 dead last May. According to the Ministry of Transport, 3,138 people died in 87,172 traffic accidents in the country in 2023.
Road accidents are frequent in Peru due to excessive speed, poor road conditions, lack of signage and lack of police control.
The efforts of the authorities have nevertheless made it possible to reduce the mortality rate linked to traffic accidents from 14 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2019, to 9.5 per 100,000 in 2023. It was 4.6 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2022 in the European Union.
