Six Chinese miners and two Congolese soldiers had been killed in a militia attack on a gold mine in northeastern Congo.
This is the latest attack as violence intensifies in this resource-rich region.
According to Jean Robert Basiloko, a member of a local civil society association, the village of Gambala and the nearby “Camp Blanquette” gold mine were hit by the attack on Wednesday in Ituri province.
The attack was claimed by a militia group known as the Cooperative for the Development of Congo (CODECO).
Eastern Congo has been torn apart for a decade by fighting between government forces and more than 120 armed groups.
