Dozens dead after landslide and torrential rain hits China

At least 46 people died and several others were injured after a deadly landslide and torrential rains in several regions of China, particularly in the center, authorities announced on Monday.

The heavy precipitation affects a large part of the country, stretching from Yunnan (southwest), bordering Vietnam, to the coastal province of Zhejiang (east), close to Shanghai, via Hunan (center).

The red alert, which corresponds to the highest level in China, was triggered in parts of this vast area, where 270 millimeters of precipitation could locally fall, the meteorological services said on Monday. Heavy rainfall could last until Thursday, they warned.

In eastern China, the popular Huangshan site, known for its picturesque mountain landscapes, is closed to the public. On Sunday, 54,000 people were evacuated due to bad weather, according to the New China news agency.
