Flooding kills at least 6 in Algeria

Six people were killed on Thursday in Algeria following flooding caused by heavy rains in the country’s western governorates.

This is according to a press release from Algeria’s Civil Protection Services (Défense Civile), after receiving calls on Wednesday evening reporting missing people swept away by the floods.

“Five bodies of people who were on board a cab that was swept away by the waters of Wadi Ghasul were found in the Wilaya of El Bayadh, in the west of the country,” reports said.

The body of another victim, aged 59, was also found. She was swept away by the torrents in the valley of the Sabdou commune in the Wilaya of Tlemcen (far west)”, reports added.

The directorate added that it had deployed dozens of diving teams and ambulances to deal with the current situation.

On Tuesday, the Civil Defense announced that 6 people had died in 24 hours as a result of flooding in several Algerian Wilayas, after having announced, around a week ago, that 3 people, including a child (aged 7), had died as a result of flooding in the Wilayas of Tipaza, to the west of the capital, and Guelma (to the east).

The death toll from flooding in Algeria has risen to 15 since the storms began at the end of May.
