Some colleges in the United States have distributed clear backpacks and implemented other security measures as school shootings become a national scourge.
“It’s for our safety.”
Middle school students from North Drchester in Cambridge, Maryland, have gotten used to it: since the start of the school year, the establishment has provided them with transparent backpacks to help identify possible firearms, the source of one incident every four days in American schools in 2023.
“If someone brings a gun, we will easily see them and we will arrest them,” said Addeline, a young schoolgirl.
Same observation for Reagan: “It is for our safety that they are transparent, so that we can see if someone has a weapon or anything else.”
Other innovations
On the part of parents, the measures are enough to alleviate the anxiety-provoking atmosphere that has weighed on the country for many years. “It doesn’t allow them to cultivate their personality but I am more serene since I know that we check their backpack before they enter the school,” confided Britney Smith.
It must be said that for the moment, the initiative is paying off, the establishment having not reported any incidents since the start of the school year. “For me, this is a success because the smallest thing that helps us improve the safety of our students is a good thing,” said Vaudh D. Evan, the principal of the college.
Especially since the establishment has gone even further in terms of security since it has invested in a weapons detection system based on artificial intelligence, placed at the entrance to the college. A system implemented in all middle and high schools in the county.
“We must not be behind in this game,” assured establishment security manager Mike Richardson. And added: “We must be at the forefront of what is being done in the United States.”
