Burkina Faso’s military leader to stay in power for five more years

Burkina Faso’s military authorities announced they would extend their rule for another five years, following a national consultation meeting in the capital, Ouagadougou.

The president of the transition, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, may also run in the next presidential election, indicates the public channel.

When he took power in a coup almost two years ago, Captain Traoré promised to restore civilian government by July 1 this year and improve the dire security situation of the country within “two to three months”.

But since making the commitment, Captain Traoré has warned that elections would not be “a priority” until the territory has been retaken from jihadist forces so that all citizens of the country can vote.

An amended charter signed by Capt Traoré specifies that the new 60-month transition period will come into force on July 2 this year.
