Ivory Coast: 17 dead in a road accident

Seventeen people died on Tuesday in a collision involving a goods truck and a 70-seater coach on the Duékoué-Daloa road in western Ivory Coast, the Ivorian Ministry of Transport announced.

The provisional toll is seventeen (17) killed and several injured taken care of by the emergency services, before being evacuated to Duekoué general hospital, the ministry said.

The Minister has instructed the Bureau Enquête Analyse Accident (BEA) of the Ministry of Transport to deploy an investigation team to the site, in order to investigate the technical and administrative causes of this accident.

Samou Diawara, head of the Ministry of Transport’s Communications Department, said “the truck was parked at the side of the road when the bus, probably disrupted by fog (at around 5:30 a.m.), hit it”.

Traffic accidents are a frequent occurrence in Ivory Coast, due in particular to the poor condition of many vehicles and the failure of some drivers to observe the highway code.

President Alassane Ouattara instructed the ministers in charge of security and transport to step up awareness campaigns and ensure strict compliance with the highway code.
