Tanzania: eight people die of Marburg virus

The World Health Organization has announced nine suspected cases, including eight deaths, of Marburg virus disease in the Kagera region, in the northwest of the country.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the risk of spread in Tanzania is high, following the discovery of several cases of Marburg virus disease, a virus in the same family as Ebola that also causes hemorrhagic fever.

“We expect more cases in the coming days, as disease surveillance improves,” reacted WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on X.

As Tanzanians transit through Kagera on their way to Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi and the DRC, border countries must be on the alert for potential new cases.
