France: a violent fire shakes the Pyrénées-Orientales region

A devastating fire struck the Christmas market in Le Barcarès, Pyrénées-Orientales, on Sunday night, partially destroying the popular venue.

The fire, which broke out at around 4 a.m., ravaged some 3,000 m², destroying seven chalets and several refrigerated trucks.

Firefighters quickly arrived on the scene and managed to bring the flames under control, but the damage remains extensive.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown, and is under investigation. Initially scheduled to open on November 16, the market will have to postpone its launch until the 23rd, as organizers work to rebuild facilities to preserve the festive atmosphere.

This event, which attracts a large public every year with 1.5 million visitors expected by 2023 represents a crucial economic stake for the commune and the region, which are punctuated every winter by this end-of-year rendezvous.
