On Monday November 4, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu ordered the immediate release of all minors currently on trial for taking part in protests against the cost of living.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Information and ends weeks of public outrage.
A total of 76 protesters have been charged with ten counts, including treason, destruction of property, disturbance of the peace and mutiny.
Some of them appeared in court on Friday. Four of them collapsed from exhaustion before they could plead their case.
According to the indictment, the minors were aged between 14 and 17.
The presidential directive, however, is without prejudice to ongoing legal proceedings.
In accordance with the President’s instructions, an administrative committee will be set up to examine all issues relating to the arrest, detention and treatment of the minors.
Investigations will also be launched into all law enforcement officers involved in their arrest.
