Deepfake pornography now punishable by law

In South Korea, a law has been passed that punishes this new form of online harassment with at least three years imprisonment and fines of 22,000 euros each.

Artificial intelligence has made it easy to create fake sexual videos featuring images of real women, including minors.

The state will be responsible for deleting these online videos, and for opening victim support centers.

According to police, 793 deepfakes-related crimes were reported between 2021 and July 2024, but only 16 people were arrested and prosecuted.

Cybersecurity start-up Security Hero reports that the number of these Artificial Intelligence-based set-ups increased by 500% in 2023, and 99% of victims are women, often famous personalities.
