The Kenyan government has announced the deaths of 42 people during nationwide protests against the Finance Bill 2024.
Kenyan Home Affairs Minister Kithure Kindiki told the National Assembly on Friday that 42 people died, 132 disappeared and 1208 were arrested during the protests.
Kindiki expressed the government’s determination to hold those involved in the violence to account, whoever they may be.
“If the police had not used lethal force during the occupation of parliament, we would never have had the Kenya we know today” he said, defending the security forces who opened fire on the demonstrators.
The demonstrators, mostly young people, protested against the Finance Bill 2024 in various towns across the country from June 18.
Security forces intervened in the demonstrations, which had been organized to react to tax increases and express concerns about economic policies, and many protesters were arrested.
