Flood death toll rises to 75 in Mali

Nigeria: floods affect 1 million people

One million people have been affected by heavy flooding in the northeastern Nigerian city of Maidguri, a government official said.

Babagana Zulum, governor of Borno state, reported that the estimate was based on a preliminary assessment conducted by the government following the floods that inundated the city of Maiduguri causing the worst damage in three decades.

“The floods have covered a third of the city, affecting more than a million people. It’s very devastating,” Zulum reported while distributing money and food to thousands of displaced people in a camp.

“More than 100,000 people had been displaced, even as search and rescue efforts continued,” he said.

“We are distributing money and food to heads of households as a temporary measure to cushion the impact and the government is planning to set up a medical team to prepare the response to possible emergencies after the waters recede“, he added.

The governor also blamed the situation on the collapse of a dam on the outskirts of the town and the overflow of water released by neighboring Niger and Cameroon.

The flood swept away animals in a zoo, damaged homes, schools, hospitals, government offices, as well as shopping centers and places of worship.
