Sixteen people lost their lives in a road accident in the department of Bambey in central Senegal, 127 km from Dakar, according to reports.
The accident involved a collision between a truck and an intercity bus, which burst into flames following a head-on collision.
“Sixteen lifeless bodies were counted, all completely burned,” said Captain Khoudia Ibrahima Mar, commander of the 21st fire and rescue company of the Thiès fire department.
Speaking to the media about the accident, Commandant Mar also mentioned 36 injured, 20 of whom were in a serious condition.
According to official figures, some 700 people die every year in road accidents in Senegal.
This issue was also at the heart of the debates during the “états généraux du transport public” launched in August by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport to find solutions to the dysfunctions observed in the sector.
