DRC: Fighting resumes in Lubero

Fighting resumed on Sunday August 25 between M23 rebels and the Congolese army in eastern DRC, Lubero, a townclose to the border with Uganda.

In a statement issued on Monday August 26, the Congolese army claimed that rebels had attacked its positions in the village of Kikubo, violating a ceasefire in force.

Lieutenant-Colonel Ndjike Kaiko Guillaume indicated that the Congolese authorities intend to refer the matter to the enlarged Joint Verification Mechanism to examine the situation.

This mechanism brings together military experts from the member states of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, as well as South Africa, MONUSCO and the African Union.

On July 30, Angola announced the conclusion of a ceasefire agreement between the DRC and Rwanda.

Kinshasa has long accused Kigali of supporting M23 fighters operating in North Kivu, an allegation that Rwanda denies.
