White House orders US federal agencies to ban Tik Tok

The White House in the United States on Monday ordered federal agencies across the country to ban the use of the TikTok app from their devices.

They will have to ensure that their devices are no longer equipped with the application of videos within 30 days, ordered Monday the Office of Management and Budget at the White House (OMB).

A few hours earlier, the Canadian government announced that it would ban the TikTok application from the mobile devices it provides to its staff as of Tuesday, citing “an unacceptable level of risk” for privacy and security.

Owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, TikTok has been targeted by US lawmakers who consider the application a threat to national security, and had banned its use on civil servants’ devices in a law passed in late December.

The OMB’s order is taken pursuant to this law, ratified in early January by President Joe Biden.
