A pastor arrested for carrying a gun at altar

A church leader who carried an assault rifle belonging to a police officer known as the church’s security officer during a Sunday sermon on “spiritual weapons” has been arrested in Abuja, Nigeria, according to reports.

The police officer was also taking to the police custody.

“He realized that even with the best of intentions, carrying a gun to illustrate his message was unwise and regrettable,” according to the church.

“The pastor has apologized unreservedly,” the church added.

“We stand on the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ which encompasses peace and goodwill for all mankind,” it is said.

The church added that it “rejects all forms of violence” and is “cooperating fully with the authorities as they investigate this incident.”

Under Nigerian law, it is only legal to carry a gun if the inspector general of police grants you a permit.
