Elections to be held on time despite insecurity in Nigeria

The general elections will be held on time despite the tense security situation in the country in Nigeria as the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (Inec), Mahmood Yakubu, said on Wednesday 18 January 2023.

While there are rumors that insecurity in some parts of the country could prevent voting in the upcoming general elections, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (Inec), Mahmood Yakubu reassures.

Speaking at an event organized by the Chatham House think tank in London, Mahmood Yakubu said the elections would be held on time.

Nigeria, the most populous country on the African continent, has been plagued by insecurity for several years now, especially in the north of the country where Boko Haram Islamists and armed gangs rule.

The next general elections will be held on February 25.

Yakubu said 93.4 million people had registered to vote, of whom more than 74 million were between 18 and 49 years old.
