DR Congo: heavy toll in anti Monusco demonstration

At least ten people died and 50 others were injured during demonstrations against the United Nations mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (Monusco), in the city of Goma, in the east of the country.

Demonstrations have continued for a second day, demanding the departure of the peacekeeping force.

After gaining access to Minusco bases, demonstrators fled with property including furniture, computers, food… some property was recovered by the police.

Local media reported on Monday that UN forces fired live bullets to prevent protesters from attacking the premises.

“We don’t have anything to say now, we are in bad times,” Monusco spokesperson Khady Lo Ndeye told the BBC when asked about the reports of casualties.
