Egypt: court demand live TV execution of woman killer

Egyptian court has called for a legal amendment to allow live broadcast of the execution of Mohammed Adel for the killing of a female student, local media reported.

The case sparked outrage in Egypt after video footage went viral last month showing Mohammed Adel stabbing Nayera Ashraf, who rejected his advances, to death outside his university.

In a letter to parliament, the court that sentenced the 22-year-old to death said the broadcast of even a part of the proceedings could achieve the goal of deterrence, the BBC reported.

Egypt does not broadcast executions, which are always carried out by hanging inside prisons.

The maximum penalty for murder is death in Egypt, which carried out the world’s third highest number of executions in 2021, according to Amnesty International.
