Burundi: opponent dies in prison, the reason

Burundian opponent of the National Congress for Freedom (CNL) principal opposition party, André Ndagijimana, died while in custody in the northern province of Ngozi.

According to the CNL, Mr Ndagijimana passed away after the prison authority refused him “permission to seek treatment”.

“It’s very sad because a person in detention retains his human dignity,” said the CNL party, ranked 2nd in the May 2020 general elections.

Mr André Ndagijimana had been arrested following clashes between militants of his party and those of the National Council for the Defense of Democracy-Forces for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD-FDD) in power.

His demands an investigation and sanctions against the head of the central prison of Ngozi where he was detained.

The funeral is scheduled for Monday, according to the CNL.
