Tunisia: opposition calls for boycott of President Saied’s referendum

Two opposition political parties in Tunisia called on their supporters to boycott the referendum on President Kais Saied’s new constitution.

Work and Achivement party and the Democratic Current parties urges their militants not to participate to the referendum scheduled for July 25.

According to Work and Achievement party, President Kais Saied’s draft constitution “seeks to entrench individual rule” and threatens the independence of the judiciary.

“President Kais Saied’s draft constitution threatens the existence of the state” said the secular Democratic Current party.

Recall that Sadok Belaid, head of the constitutional project drawn up by President Kais Saied rejects the president’s plan, saying it is dangerous for the country.

But Mr Saied denied that his proposed constitution would restore authoritarian rule, insisting instead that it would guarantee citizens rights and freedoms.
