Turkey strongly condemns attack on AU base in Somalia

Turkey strongly condemned on Tuesday the terrorist attack against the military base of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) in the center of the country, where Burunian soldiers house.

In a statement, the Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned the attack by Al-Shabab militants on the AU base.

“We strongly condemn the heinous terrorist attack against the base of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia, in the Shabelle region, during which a large number of Burundian soldiers were killed and injured,” the statement said.

The ministry also expressed condolences to the Burundi government as well as the Somali government for the loss of life suffered in the attack, and wish a speedy recovery to the injured.

170 soldiers reportedly died in the attack.

Al-Shabab militants said they took complete control of the base but this has not been independently confirmed.

Ankara reaffirmed its willingness to support Somalia in its fight against terrorism.
