According to researchers Frank Nyonator and Ken Sagoe, this West African country lost 50% of its nursing workforce between 1995 and 2005 despite certain advantages (free housing and bonuses) to curb this brain drain.
In 2016, there were only 3,365 doctors, or 1 per 8,500 inhabitants.
Ghana is not alone in the case. South Africa and Nigeria are also facing this situation.

A 2018 Mo Ibrahim Foundation report indicates that 13,584 African-trained physicians were working in the United States in 2015, a 27% increase from 2005. A significant number of these professionals come from four countries in particular: Egypt , Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa. This is a shortfall for the continent.
