An identity for stateless persons in Ivory Coast, a first in Africa

Stateless persons or persons “at risk of statelessness” are those who do not have a nationality or do not have legal documents to prove it.

Ivory coast is setting up two commissions to give these vulnerable people a status.
According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), there are nearly 1.6 million people in this case. They do not have a birth certificate, nationality certificate or identity document.

Ivory coast , with the help of the UNHCR, could enable stateless persons and persons at risk of statelessness to have a recognized legal existence and to integrate fully into society.
